Brittany Ferries' Barfleur, which completed its final sailing on the Poole–Cherbourg route on Monday, has made its maiden crossing from Cherbourg to Rosslare Europort, arriving on Tuesday afternoon. According to the company's website it will serve the France–Ireland route only during October.
The move follows a gearbox failure on Commodore Clipper, the vessel intended as back-up on the route. Its return to service has been pushed back again, now to early December.
Cotentin, which Brittany Ferries plans to sell, is still connecting Cherbourg in a freight-only role, alongside the E-Flexer Santoña and the chartered P&O ro-pax Norbay. The 1992-built Barfleur is itself due to be sold as part of the company's cost-cutting restructuring.
